About this tool
The Automated Land Acknowledger is a free, privacy-respecting web application that generates a personalized land acknowledgement based on your current GPS coordinates or an address you enter. It uses Indigenous territory, language, and treaty data from Native Land Digital and reverse geocoding from OpenStreetMap Nominatim. The application runs entirely in your browser; no coordinates, addresses, or session data are stored or transmitted to the site operator.
How it works
- Tap "Acknowledge my current location" to use device GPS, or enter an address, city, or landmark.
- Choose a length: Extensive, Abbreviated, or Very Abbreviated.
- Review the resulting Certificate of Acknowledgement, which lists the Indigenous Nations whose territory overlaps your coordinates along with language and treaty findings.
- Read the text aloud, copy as plain text or Markdown, share as a PNG, copy a permalink, or print.
Generate an acknowledgement
Territory, language, and treaty data are retrieved from Native Land Digital, a not-for-profit mapping Indigenous territories, treaties, and languages. Boundaries are approximate, contested, and a work in progress; please consult local Nations directly for anything more than a polite gesture.
Reverse address lookup is provided by OpenStreetMap / Nominatim. This system is provided without warranty, sincerity calibration, or guarantee of moral improvement. No coordinates are stored, logged, or transmitted to the operator of this site.
